RACE START: Algoma Canyon Tour Train

While not technically the race start – this is where you must meet no later than 7:15am on Saturday, August 17th.  Be ready with your bags (we will load them and take to the finish of Stage 1), and your bike already in a bike box.  Bikes will be loaded, the railway have been so kind as to add an extra car specifically for our bikes!

Stage 2 Location: Searchmont Resort

Searchmont is a skiers paradise, and are opening their doors this summer for Crank the Shield!  Few people will know, but Searchmont held Ontario Cup mountain bike races almost 20 years ago!  Various other events have used the area, and the singletrack is still there, waiting to be sniffed out and re-invigorated for an awesome finish to Day 2!

Stage 3 location: Finish at Kinsmen Park

This gem run by the Kinsmen has been home to Mountain Bike Races for over 25 years!  The local Kinsmen and a litany of helpers have made this a truly incredible riding destination, and we’ll use the majority of their 20km of singletrack as wicked bookend to Crank the Shield: SSM!  Kinsmen Park is a mere 10 minute drive from downtown Sault Ste. Marie!

Kinsmen Park: 1100 Fifth Line East, Sault Ste. Marie, ON P6A 5K7

Welcome to Algoma Country!

Please note that some of Crank The Shield’s course goes through private property with permission granted only for the event. Please ride responsibly and do not trespass.  That being said, you probably won’t know where the heck you are anyways!

Sault Ste. Marie – Home of Crank the Shield: SSM

Sault Ste. Marie, the “Friendly” city, does not disappoint!  This charming Northern City is the gateway to Algoma Country, Lake Superiors incredible North Shore, and is even the home of Canada’s first female Astronaut!  In addition to every amenity possible, the “Soo” is home of the famous Algoma Canyon Tour Train, and is a quick bridge away from it’s sister city in the U.S., also named Sault Ste. Marie!  For more information on this incredible city and its environs, go to www.saultstemarie.ca

Algoma Country

Algoma is the backdrop for this spectacular adventure.  The land is so wild, so remote, so stunning, that Lawren Harris of the famed Group of Seven would, for many years, rent a boxcar off the Algoma railway, getting dropped off with other members to paint this vast land.  For Crank the Shield, we are working on having an artist in residence throughout the trip, and will have paintings by prominent painters as prizes along the way.  For more information on the group’s vast history in Algoma, visit this LINK

Algoma boasts some of the finest shorelines in the world!  The world’s largest Lake, Lake Superior weaves its way northward, and some of the prettiest sections lie within Algoma!  If you’ve never before gazed upon the vast beauty of Superior’s crystal clear waters, you owe it to yourself to stay after, or come early and enjoy this magnificent wonder.  For more information on Algoma, go to: www.algomacountry.com
