History of CRANK, and BACKCOUNTRY Stage Race accommodations:

Our initial vision for Crank the Shield, was to house riders in Kid’s summer camps.  While this was a great time, it forced up to 20 people to share large facilities, and one person snoring could mess up a good night’s sleep.  It also meant we had to do the event, when the camps were vacant, in September.  Many cold nights, and frigid rainy days later, we realized the trade-off wasn’t so great.  The roots of Mountain Bike Stage races in remote areas is camping – massive tent cities were and are commonplace at the BC Bike Race, and Trans-Rockies, often in a ball diamond or wherever there is grass.  We are very lucky to have the options, in the remote area of Algoma, that we have been afforded!  The 2-day, summer version of 2015 had NO indoor facilities available, for one night riders enjoyed their RV’s or tent accommodations.

The standard price of $739 + tax (non-VIP) includes all food, use of each building, access to showers, flush washrooms, and plenty of space for your RV or tent.  Both Stokely Creek Lodge and Searchmont Resort do have various indoor facilities if you’re afraid of bears, however we will have signage up telling the bears to stay away:) Included for all riders are the unique add-ons, including a painting tutorial with master artist Norman R. Brown, a presentation on the rich history of the area by some famous locals, and much more!

The VIP add-on, for an additional $175 (only 50 available), gives you a bed with bedding both nights – one to 3 beds to a room for Stokely, 3 in some cases at the accommodations at Searchmont. If you choose the VIP add-on, you can choose roommates at the time of checkout. These go fast, so register soon if you want the VIP treatment!

Other registration/Accommodation options:

Resident of the Soo and want to stay at home?  From out of town and want to stay at a nearby hotel or B&B?  Here are some options that will help cut costs and suit your needs:

  1. Enjoy all breakfasts/Dinners, but stay elsewhere.  Email if this is for you and you will get an individual coupon code for $50 off for when you register!
  2. I JUST wanna RACE!  Ok, so you don’t wanna hang out with a bunch of tired cyclists and talk about bike parts.  (It’s way more fun than that, but you get the drift).  This option will get you a different coloured wristband – you’ll still get the full race experience, aid stations, finish line Pizza and food – AND the grand finale BBQ, you just wont be dining with us or using our facilities at Stokely or Searchmont.  This option will save you $130 – again, if you’d like this option, please email for an individual coupon code to use at time of checkout!
  3. Have any other special needs/requests?  Email us and we’ll make it work for you!

Day 1 lodging: Stokely Creek Lodge

Stokely Creek Lodge is a winter paradise that is opening it’s doors for us this summer.  Rated one of the worlds best Nordic Ski destinations, Stokely Creek offers 170 km of unparalleled groomed trails through stunning backcountry, incredible accommodations, and awesome food!  For summer use, Stokely has over 10 kms of rugged MTB specific Singletrack, and is part of the Algoma Highlands Conservancy.

The rooms offered under the VIP program have one to three beds to each room (if you’re alone, you’ll likely be bunked with someone), and your own washroom and shower.  We will ask that you allow 1 – 2 participants the courtesy of using your shower, but the room is yours for the evening.

Day 2 lodging: Unlike 2018, riders will stay both nights at Stokely Creek lodge!
